The above drawing was created by Bug, who works with a team of volunteers in Guatamala to design and build bicycle powered machines under an organization called Maya Pedal. Maya Pedal’s purpose is to use bicycle parts to create a plethora of elegant and useful Bicimáquinas (translates as “bicycle machines”) designed to simplify agricultural tasks such as grinding and water pumping, and other mechanical tasks like cutting and sharpening. Each bicimáquina is produced individually in the shop in Guatamala with a combination of old bikes sent from the U.S., concrete, wood, and metal. Bicimáquinas are just a part of their goal to provide a basis for micro-agricultural operations, helping rural community groups, comprised mostly of Mayan women, to feed their families or earn money selling goods in the local markets.
